The term, General Public, refers to the large majority of the population that has little knowledge of arts. In other words they are not a part of the minority group known as the “Art World.”

We can categorize the general public into “prepared” and “unprepared” audience.

People are exposed to shock after shock (whether it’s through art or media) and thus they grow numb to it. This pushes the artist to go to extremes in order to generate the required shock effect. Prepared audience is usually familiar with the idea that the shock factor is a recurring theme in Modern Arts, therefore they visit exhibitions half prepared.

* Frequent competition with the media and entertainment.

On the other hand, the extremes utilized by the artists create a greater shock for the unprepared audience, they experience a greater shock because they were not aware of it or were not expecting it.
