Tribulations and Accomplishments

The Louisiana Purchase- For the longest time, America shipped their good the tough the port in Louisiana. When the French closed that port off from Americans, we were at a lost. We used the Mississippi to ship our goods. Napoleon, the leader at the time, decided he no longer needed the land, and offered to see it to the states. In 1803, Jefferson fashioned the purchase as a treaty that doubled the size of the United States.

Lewis and Clark Expedition- After the purchase of the LA Purchase, Jefferson decided to send two explorers to explore the land they the United States had recently acquired. Lewis and Clark were sent to find a water way that stretched cross country and lead to the Pacific Ocean. They of course never found to, because it doesn't exist, but the knowledge they gathered during the journey encouraged people to start moving west onto this new land.

Barbary Pirates- When America became a country, we had to start setting up protection for our own ships. In Northern Africa, the Barbary Pirates ruled the seas, and attacked boats. We had paid some of the nations, including Tripoli, to help protect our ships from these attacks. However, Barbary Pirates managed to take ships hostage, and would only set them free if we paid a tribute. Jefferson refused, and this led to a war with Tripoli.
