Tribulations and Accomplishments

XYZ Affair- This was a diplomatic affair that took place during 1797-1798. This was early in Adam's time as president, and involved a confrontation between the United States and Republican France. It led to an undeclared war called the Quasi-War.

Alien and Sedition Acts- These were four acts passed by Congress under John Adams. These acts made it harder to become a citizen of the United States, and made it illegal to say anything against the government. It was argued that these acts were persecuting Democratic Republicans and against the Constitution.

Jay's Treaty- Officially known as the Treaty of Amity, Commerce, and Navigation, Between His Britannic Majesty and the United States of America, was known for avoiding a war that might have arose, and solved any remaining issues left by the Treaty of Paris that ended the Revolutionary War.
