Major Leaders in Education Reform and their Accomplishments

-Horace Mann

-Made schools required in children.

-Created government funded public schooling.

>Led to increase in secondary schools and universities.

-He pushed for teaching training and improved facilities.

-Made textbooks published.

-Establish special training schools for teachers.

-Mann lengthened the school year to 6 months/curriculum.

-Supported that teachers should be trained.

-Later became secretary of the MA Board of Education.

-In 1837, Mary Lyon founded Mount Holyoke:

-The nation's first permanent women's college.

-Some reformers focused on teaching people with disabilities.

-Thomas Galludet:

>Who developed a method to education people who were hearing impaired.

>Opened the Hartford School for the Deaf in Connecticut.

-Dr. Samuel Howe advanced the cause of those who were visually impaired.

-He developed books with large raised letters.

Created Perkins Institute:

>Schools for the blind, in Boston.
