Major Leaders in Abolition/Emancipation reform and their Accomplishments
-William Lloyd Garrison
-Was a white editor and a radical abolitionist.
-Started his own newspaper called "The Liberator" in 1831, which called for emancipation.
-Frederick Douglas
-Was born into slavery in 1817.
-His slaveowner's wife taught him how to read and write until her husband forbid her teaching.
-The slaveowner's believed it "would forever unfit him to be a slave."
-Despite Douglas's learning setback, he continued to study because he believed it was his path to freedom.
-He eventually escaped slavery and wrote a newspaper called "The Northstar."
-David Walker
-Walker was a free black slave who published a book named "Appeal to the Colored Citizens of the World" in 1829.
-Walker believed that slaves should fight for their right to be free instead of waiting for it to happen.
-Nat Turner
-Was born into slavery in 1800 in Southampton County, Virginia.
-Was a skilled preacher who was chosen by the people to lead the slaves out of bondage.
-Led a rebellion, taking over 4 plantations and killing about 60 white plantation owners before being captured.
-Was hanged.
-Rebellion caused whites to kill 200 black slaves and strengthen the grip the plantation owners held.
