-Large gatherings 20,000 people are more attended outdoor camps called revivals.

-Lasted 4-5 days.

-During day people prayed.

-At night they listened to speeches by powerful preachers.

-Took place away western frontier (many in western NY).


-Effects

-In 1800, just 1 in 15 Americans belonged to a church.

-By 1850 1 in 6 belonged to a church.

-Enabled African Americans a chance to embrace Christianity.

-African Americans formed baptist and Methodists churches (which became the center of their society).

-Inspired desire for freedom.

>All men are equal.
