(4) PCR of ear swab for VZV
SALIENT POINTS:
This patient has Ramsay Hunt syndrome (Herpes zoster oticus),
Caused by VZV reactivation in the geniculate ganglion of cranial nerve VII, i.e. this is essentially zoster of CN VII.
Diagnosis is best established by PCR of lesion exudate.
Viral culture now rarely done due to cost and time of turnover.
