This patient traveled in rural areas of China in which Japanese encephalitis virus infection is hyperendemic, with infections particularly common in November through March.
The usual incubation period is 4-21 days, making ten weeks beyond the range.
Despite the name, Japanese encephalitis is now rare in Japan.
Mosquitoes, the vectors of Japanese B encephalitis, would be rare in the chilly Tokyo winter and a high per cent of the population in Japan have been vaccinated.
