Other Immigrants from Europe

The second and third largest groups to immigrate to Texas were Ireland and England. Grant were received by empresarios from Ireland and were active in the Texas revolutionary war by Spain. Many Irish fled to Texas because of a famine caused by a disease in Their potatoes. There were 1,400 Irish settlers in Texas in 1850 and increased by 2,000 in 10 years. San Patricio and Refugio were popular for Irish settlers. Settlers came from France to. Along the Medina river a colony was formed named Castroville and was made by a man named Henri Castro. The colony settlers spoke German but lived In a French province so they were often mistaken for being German. Settlers came to settle In Texas from pretty much every country in Europe. In Karnes county in the town of Panna Maria, polish immigrants were led by Father Leopald Moczygemba to be settled. A large group of Czechs were led into central Texas by Ernst Bergmann and Josef Lesikar. Large numbers of immigrant from Sweden, Norway, Italy and the Netherlands also arrived in the 1850's.
