Flooding of the Nile
The Nile was very unpredictable when it came to when it would flood, sometimes the Nile wouldn’t flood at all. This most likely meant catastrophe for the Egyptians, since they needed the Nile to renew their farmlands. Without the water, they most likely dried up or the soil wasn’t as good if it were replenished by the water. This is what happened to Cleopatra, when she became ruler, the flooding became less reliable. This resulted in failing crops, and led to inflation and hunger. Egyptians built their calendar around the Nile River, which consisted of three seasons. Akhet, or inundation, was considered the first season and was the time fo the flooding. Peret, the growing season and Sheme, the harvest season. The cause of the flooding each year was heavy rains and melting snow to the South, near the source of the Nile. Ancient Egyptians believed the floods were caused by the goddess Isis, as she cried for her dead husband Osiris. The water also provided a permanent source of water and animals and fish to hunt and catch for food. Although the Nile provided many things for the Egyptians, the dry climate near the Nile made it so the ancient pyramids still stand today.
