Life Under Slavery: Urban and Rural
-Rural slaves worked mostly on large plantations, working from sunrise to sunset.
-Rural slaves had more laborious tasks in the South such as picking cotton and cleaning it with the cotton gin.
-By 1850, most slaves lived on large plantations, working amongst other slaves.
-Yet, many lived on
small farms and
worked with their
owners.
-Urban slaves worked on ships, in mills, and as blacksmiths and carpetenters.
-Woman and children worked the same jobs as men in Southern Industries.
-Urban slaves did less physically exhausting tasks and were better clothes and fed.
