Major Leaders in Education Reform

Horace Mann

He was one of the leaders in the public school reform movement. As a child, he worked most of the time and barely attended a poor school. He was the first secretary of the Massachusetts Board of Education, in 1837. He established teacher-training programs and started curriculum reforms.
