Major Leaders in Abolition and Emancipation Reform

William Lloyd Garrison

In 1831, he started his own paper called The Liberator. He was in supprt of immediate emancipation with no payment to slaveholders, which he expressed in his paper. Emancipation is the freeing of slaves. In 1832, he founded the New England Anti-Slavery Society, and in 1833, he founded the national American Anti-Slavery Society.

Frederick Douglass

He was born into slavery and was taught to read and write by his slave owner's wife. By 1838, he had a job as a ship caulker in Baltimore, which earned him top wages that he was not allowed to keep. After an argument with his owner, he escaped to New York. He became a lecturer for the American Anti-Slavery Society founded by Garrison. In 1847, he left Garrison and started his own newspaper called The North Star.
