Abolition and Emancipation Reform
By the 1820s, there were more than 100 antislavery societies. African Americans were joined by white Americans to criticize slavery. Abolition is the call to outlaw slavery. In 1850, most of the 434,000 free blacks in the South worked as day laborers, but some had jobs as artisans. In the North, free blacks could only get the lowest-paying jobs.
