The advent of original genres
After two decades of horror and comedy, people were ready for something different. To keep the audience intrigued, film producers searched high and low for new ideas. In the 1940s , genres such as romance and film noir made their debut. Romances were popular for their stories of lovers being separated, and eventually finding their way back into each others arms. This, believe it or not, was geared towards couples, and their relationships. Perhaps the most recognizable of romance films is Casablanca. It was known for its gripping story which took place during World War II.
Another genre which became popular at the time was film noir. This genre saw hardened detectives squaring off against memorable villains either with their brains, their gun, or occasionally their fists. Possibly the most memorable of film noir at the time was the Maltese Falcon. This film was entirely about the investigation to figure out who stole a golden encrusted falcon from the island of Malta. The film was memorable for introducing the genre and featuring some memorable actors. Unfortunately the novelty of this genre eventually wore out, and it met its end in the 1950s.
The concept of film noir would be adopted for action television series in the 1960s.
