-Because of the cold winters in buna, Elie’s foot began to swell. Surgery was performed but with no anestisia. (Bayer 51) While Elie was still in the hospital recovering, the prisoners were evacuating Buna because the Red Army was closing in and the Nazi’s and the victim did not know if they would be liberated or killed. Elie and his father chose to evacuate, and his father said to him, “Let’s hope we shan’t regret it, Eliezer.”(53)
-The 42-mile run was in action. Many including one of Elie’s friends were shot if they stopped running. In addition, others were trampled. Food and water was scarce, only snow. Sleeping was risky in case one would not awake. Once arrived at Glewitz, they settled for 3 days. (Wiesel 91) After a selection was held, father barely passing if it was not for Elie causing chaos, they boarded a cattle train fitting 100 staving, thirsty, skinny and tired prisoners. (Bayer 56) Men were thrown out of the boxcar if dead. Many died from suffocation as well due to the crowdedness. (Wiesel 92)
-Finally, 10 days later, the cattle train arrived at Buchenwald with only 12 out of the 100 prisoners who boarded, still living, including Elie and his father. ((Bayer 57) Once arrived, they were informed, the prisoners who stayed at Buna, were liberated 2 days after they left.
