-Although being stripped of all of their rights, all of their belongings, and forced to live in ghettos, all the victims were still curious of what was happening, they had a clue, but thoughts of only working camps.
-Horror arose when families were separated and shoved into trains for deportation to camps including Elie’s family.(Bayer 35)
-Elie and his families first stop after a long trip was at Auschwitz-Birkenau. Birkenau was the extermination camp near Poland. (Ayer 8)
-Birkenau was established in October of 1941 and had the largest population of prisoners.(ushmm.org)In fact, Birkenau was the largest single center of mass murder in
history. 1.5 million people were murdered here. (Moore 47) Immediately, the first selection was held.
-The words, “Women to the right, men to the left” is what Elie heard and that was the last time he saw his mother and Tsiporah, his little sister.(Wiesel 27) Elie and his father lied to Dr. Mengele, who was directing which way for the selection, saying their ages were 18 and 40!
