Panama is the home of the strip of land that connects both North and South America. Panama is known for it's supply of fish and the famous canal that ships off goods to and from many countries. The Panama Canal. The Panama Canal was first used by the two tribes that occupied Panama: the Cuevas (meaning cave) and the Cocle ( which is now a state in Panama). The Spanish had taken over around the 1500s, forcing Panamanians to fight for their independence. Later on Colombia had taken over.
Panama agreed to join the U.S. In 1903 in exchange to help them gain their independence from Colombia.
Around 1984 Panama had its first dictator, General Manuel Noriega. He controlled the presidents in order to get what he wanted. The U.S. refused to help due to Panama's political issues and their attack on a U.S. official. But around 1983 the U.S. finally helped and were able to kick Noriega out of office.
