Tradition

The most famous tradition is the Big Celebration. Four days before Ash Wednesday festivals, carnivals, and parties are held all around Panama. Each day has its own certain event.
On Friday a "Queen" is selected to attend parades and official activities. Saturday might as well be everyone's relief, because on that day people get soaked with water that is thrown at them with fire hoses, water balloons, and buckets. Perfect for a sweaty, sunny day.
Sunday is the Pollera Parade. The Pollera is the national dress of Panama. It is consisted of cotton embroidery, lace, pearls, and gold.

Head decoration was also a part of the dress. They are combs originally made out of gold, silver, pearls, sea shells, or coral. The Pollera has been there since 1815.
Monday is the only day with no events. It is the same as every other day, except for the festivities. Tuesday is the day that everything is kicked into high gear, hence the name "Fat Tuesday". The only thing that will be going on are parades, parties, and other fun activities.
Because of these honorable traditions Panama is known to have the second largest carnival celebration in the world.
