Caroline was saddened to discover that many of these people were living in terrible conditions in Australia. Many were homeless, unemployed and starving - they were desperate for help.

In 1838 Caroline and her family set sail for Australia and settled in Sydney. It was during this time that she began the work she was most remembered for.

Like today, many people in the 19th century had decided to migrate to Australia in search of a better life.
