Amelie's 'situation of normality' starts off with her peculiar parents. Her mother, a former school mistress, is neurotic and depressive to be around. Her father, a doctor, is also difficult, as he is emotionally-distant from almost everyone. To make matters worse, he mistakenly believes that Amelie suffers from a heart condition, and as a result must be homeschooled by her mother. Both her mother and father do little to fill the holes of isolation Amelie deals with. After her mother dies in a freak accident, Amelie saves up enough money to leave her father and waitress downtown. Although Amelie escapes the horrors of her childhood, she is still in search of finding the love that her parents struggled to give her. Her call to adventure begins when she accidentally breaks a tile in the wall of her bathroom. When she removes it, she finds a time capsule of a previous resident.
