"The Stone Breakers"

By: Gustave Courbet
Date: 1849
Period: French Revolution

Describe:
Courbet depicts two men breaking stone and laboring in the countryside.
-edge lines
-organic shapes

Analyze:
-the men dominate the painting because they are in the foreground
-the black shadow and background are negative space
- proportional
-one man on left, one man on right creates balance
-thin almost transparent clothing adds visual interest
-static because of the horizontal background

Interpret:
I think this work is depicting the relationship between coworkers/laborers during the French Revolution. This is shown through the thin clothing and body language the men are giving off.
