"Arnolfini Wedding"
Describe:
Jan Van Eyck portrays a man and woman getting married. They are in their bedroom, there is a dog and shoes pointing outward, and the woman has her hand on her stomach.
-implied lines
-complex shapes
-woman's dress is green= life
Analyze:
I think the work is trying to communicate the role of the man and woman in marriage in this time period. Man's role is to be the provider and to be loyal to his wife. I know this because the shoes are pointing outward and the dog symbolizes loyalty. The woman is supposed to bear children and be a homebody. I know this because she has her hand over her stomach, symbolizing pregnancy, and she is standing farthest from the door.
