Major leaders in temperance movement/ their accomplishments

Many Americans thought of drunkenness as a serious problem.
Lyman Beecher, a prominent Connecticut minister, had begun lecturing against all liquor use in 1825.
One year later the United States temperance society was founded.
This brought a decline in alcohol consumption into the 1860's.
