Mr. Brocklehurst

Mr. Brocklehurst is the stern-faced man who is in charge of Lowood school. He is cruel to the girls and is very hypocritical. Mr. Brocklehurst proudly emphasizes that he is a religious man by constantly speaking about God and the Bible. Yet he goes around intimidating others by telling them that they will go to Hell for their sins. Mr. Brocklehurst clearly shows that he is a hypocrite when he says: "I have a Master to serve whose kingdom is not of this world: my mission is to mortify in these girls the lusts of the flesh; to teach them to clothe themselves with shame-facedness and sobriety, not with braided hair and costly apparel and each of the young persons before us has a string of hair twisted in plaits which vanity itself might have woven: these, I repeat, must be cut off [...]" (99). At this point, his wife and daughters walk in wearing the most luxurious clothes and the latest hairdos.
