When Jane accidentally drops her slate in front of Mr. Brocklehurst, he punishes Jane in front of the class by making her stand on a stool while he tells everyone that she is a liar. Despite that Mr. Brocklehurst banned other students from talking to Jane as well, Helen passed silent smiles which made Jane feel better. After school ends, Jane feels humiliated and Helen tries to comfort her. Jane tries to prove to Miss Temple that she is not a liar by telling her about her harsh life back at Gateshead. Miss Temple writes to Mr. Lloyd and requests for confirmation about Jane's past life. He then confirms that Jane's story is true, so Miss Temple publicly announces that Jane innocent. Relieved, Jane devotes herself to her studies.
