Helen Burns attends Lowood school which is where she meets Jane and becomes her best friend. After being yelled at by Miss Scatcherd, Helen shares her beliefs with Jane, which are loving her enemies and accepting punishments. Helen affected Jane by being her friend. She also helped Jane by cheering her up when she would get bullied: like when Mr. Brocklehurst punished her in front of her school. Although they are friends, Jane didn't always agree with Helen's decisions. When Helen spoke about her beliefs, Jane said,“But I feel this, Helen; I must dislike those who, whatever I do to please them, persist in disliking me; I must resist those who punish me unjustly. It is as natural as that I should love those who show me affection, or submit to punishment when I feel it is deserved.” (89). She is talking about how she does not agree with Helen's beliefs.
