VirtualBox

VirtualBox is an application under continuous development by Oracle Computing and made available under an open source license. The purpose of VirtualBox is to provide an environment under which other operating systems may be mounted and run as virtual machines. For example, a user running Apple’s OS X operating system may install VirtualBox as an application and then use it as a medium for running a Linux distribution, e.g., Ubuntu, on the same computer, under a configuration whereby the guest operating system, i.e., Ununtu, shares computing resources with the native operating system.

For students with the appropriate equipment, VirtualBox will serve as the basis for work in the course with the Linux operating system.
