The spinning mule was invented in 1779 by Samuel Compton. Just like earlier inventions, the spinning Jenny and the water frame, the spinning mule used water power from rapid streams to drive spinning wheels. This machine made thread that was stronger, finer, and more consistent then earlier spinning machines. It allowed one spinner to work eight threads at a time. This was useful because of how high the demand for cloth was.
