In 1700, wealthy landowners bought the land once worked by village farmers and enclosed the land with fences or hedges. Enclosures led landowners to experiment with different agricultural methods. Because of advances in agriculture, for example crop rotation, and advances in livestock breeding, the population of England increased. An increasing population put high demands on goods such as cloth. Textiles were the first to industrialize.
