The roots of Chechen strife

The Russian conquest of the region now known as Chechnya started as far back as 1558. Chechens converted to Sunni Islam as the centuries passed. Usually Islam is associated with resistance against Russian domination.

Before Chechnya became established the Russian federation reinforced the ideals and religious hierarchical system numerous times.
