Luther thought that anyone could have a direct relationship with god without going through the priest or pope. Luther also thought that buying indulgences was useless.
Martin believed that as long as anyone believed in god and lived by the bible, their souls would be saved. He also translated the Bible's New Testament into German so the people could read it themselves.
Luther also began to depart from the church teachings by marring a former nun in 1525. The Roman Catholic Church did not let preists get married but he still did.
He nailed a list of complaints called the Ninety-Five Theses. Martin hung this list of complaints on the door of a church in Wittenberg. This included that only God, not the pope, could grant forgiveness.
