Regional terms (used to designate specific areas of the body)
- axial part: makes up the main axis of the body including the head, neck, and trunk.
- appendicular part: consists of appendages or things attached to the axis.
Directional terms
- superior: toward the head or upper body
- inferior: away from the head toward the feet
- anterior: toward or at the front of the body. Ex. The breastbone is anterior to the spine
- posterior: opposite of anterior
- medial: toward the inner or midline of the body
- lateral: away from the midline
- intermediate: between a more medial and lateral structure
- proximal: closer to the origin of the body part or point of attachment of a limb to the axis
- distal: farther from the origin of the body part
- superficial: toward or at the body surface
- deep: away from the body surface
