Selective permeability is a character of healthy membrane. When it is damaged it is permeable to virtually anything.

Passive transport: substances cross the membrane without any energy input.
-diffusion: molecules scatter evenly throughout the environment
-filtration: across capillary walls

Active transport: the cell provides the metabolic energy needed for the cell to cross the membrane.
