Major Leaders in Prison and Asylum Reform
Dorothea Dix became apart of the social reform after she visited a prison in Massachusetts and realized it held the mentally ill. She reported her findings to MA and a law was made to fix these conditions and persuaded 9 states to set up homes for the mentally ill. In 1831 Alexis de Tocqueville visited the US to study prisoners who were isolated for long periods of time and physically punished prisoners.
