The Cult of Domesticity
The cult of domesticity was a belief that married women restricted their activities to their home and family. About 1 in 5 white women had worked for money in the years before they were married, by 1850. 1 in 10 single women worked outside the home earning half the pay that men could receive. Women could not vote in the early 1800s and once she became married everything belonged to her husband.
