. Munich Conference - September 1938. European politicians formulated the policy of appeasement. Italy, France, Great Britain, and Germany attended the meeting. Revealed how most nations outside the revisionist phere had decided to deal with territorial expansion by aggressive nations, especially Germany.
.. By ‘appeasing’ Hitler, the British and French government extracted a promise that Hitler would cease further efforts to expand German territorial claims.
.. Because the French and British did not want war, they approved the Munich accord.
.. Hitler, however, refused to be bound by the Munich agreement and in the next year, it had taken over most of Czechoslovakia. As Hitler next began to threaten Poland, France and Britain decided to defend it, fearing that their policy of appeasement was not working.
.. By this time, Stalin had jumped into the big picture. He was convinced that British and French leaders were conspiring to deflect German aggression towards the Soviet Union. Stalin accordingly sought an accommodation with the Nazi Regime.
... Soviet Union and Germany signed the Russian-German Treaty of Nonaggression (the Nazi-Soviet Pact) which promised neutrality in the event of war with a third party, preventing the possibility of a war on two fronts.
