Jews
. The long history of anti-semitism created the widespread tolerance to anti-Jewish measures. Jews had hardly anyone in the society to defend them. The genocide happened because of the combination of the Nazi’s determination to destroy the Jews and the Europeans’ passive acceptance of anti-Semitism.
. At first, the Jews were encouraged by the Nazis to emigrate - and a big part of the Jewish population did. Tens of thousands of Jews fled from Germany and Austria to safer places.
. However, there were a bigger part of the population that could not do so. Most nations outside the Nazi orbit refused to take in Jewish refugees, especially if the Jewish migrants were impoverished (and most of them were, because the Nazi took away all their wealth.)
. This became even more problematic as more and more countries fell under the Nazi control.
