The Battle of Britain
. Germany then moved on to Britain, led by its air force, the Luftwaffe. Their plan was to defeat Britain using only (or mostly) air attacks.
. The German planes dropped bombs on heavily populated civilian areas, especially London, killing more than 40,000 people.
. The Royal Air Force of Britain fought back against the Germans, forcing Hitler to abandon his plans to invade Britain.
. By 1941, Germany’s conquests extended to the Balkans, and the battle front was extended to North Africa. There, the British fought both the Italians and the Germans.
Hitler had successfully reversed the outcome of World War I.
Soviet Union
. After his conquest of western Europe, Hitler then turned his sights on the Soviet Union. He was especially interested in invading the Soviet Union, because he wanted to create more Lebensraum (“living space”) for the resettled Germans after kicking the Jews, Slaves, and the Bolsheviks out.
. Hitler felt very confident after all of his successful conquests. He believed that the Soviet was so bankrupt that “You only have to kick in the door, and the whole rotten structure will come crashing down” (what Hitler said of Operation Barbarossa)
