Germany
. Systematically undid the Treaty of Versailles and the fragile peace of the interwar years.
. Germans and their political leaders hated harsh terms imposed on their nation. Even other European nations eventually realized the harsh nature of the Versailles Treaty’s terms and turned a blind eye to the revisionist actions of Adolf Hitler and his government
.. Hitler came to power in 1933 riding a wave of public discontent with Germany’s postwar position of powerlessness and the suffering caused by the Great Depression.
.. Blamed Jews as Germany’s internal enemies (signing of the 1918 armistice as the “November crime”). Neighboring European states also shared the blame such as Poland, France, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Hungary, and Austria.
Hitler’s scheme for ridding Germany of its enemies and reasserting its power was remilitarization which was legally denied to Germany under the Versailles Treaty. His aggressive foreign policy helped relieve the German public’s feeling of war shame and depression trauma. After withdrawing Germany from the League of Nations, his government had a massive plan to strengthen the German armed forces. Hitler reinstated universal military service and the next year, his troops entered the previously demilitarized land that bordered France. Germany joined with Italy in the Spanish Civil War where HItler’s troops honed their skills.
.. In 1938, Hitler began the campaign of expansion that ultimately led to the outbreak of World War II in Europe
