The Second Great Awakening was a broad religious movement that swept the United States after 1790. It rejected the 18th-century Calvinistic belief that God predetermined whether a person went to heaven or hell. The a Second Great Awakening promoted responsibility for seeking salvation, and they insisted that people could improve themselves and society.
