Charles Grandison Finney was one of the major leaders of the great awakening. Finney inspired emotional religious faith and he used a speaking style that was as much high drama as prayer or sermon. Finney seated the most likely converts in his audience on a special "anxious bench," where he could keep his eyes on them.
