Education for Women
Until the 1820s, American girls had few educational avenues open to them beyond elementary school. In 1821 Emma Willard opened one of the nation's first academically rigorous schools for girls in Troy, New York. This new school became the model for a new type of women's school. Many other schools for girls were made at later times.
