Still Life with Quince, Cabbace, Melon, and Cucumber

Artist: Sanchez Cortan

Title: Still Life with Quince, Cucumber, Cabbace, Melom, and Cucumber

Date: 1602-1603

Medium: Oil on canvas

Currently: Fine Arts Gallery (San Diego)

Source: http://bettybaroque.wordpress.com/2011/04/19/week-13-juan-sanchez-cotan-1560-1627/

Description: Veggies going from hanging on a roof to settling on the table. The food appears to be rotten. Colors are dark and fruit is highlighted making the light source apparent.

Analysis: the eye of the viewer goes directly to the fruit in the middle because the highlight bring emphasis. The cast shadow make it apparent where the light source is coming from. The black background allows the veggies to catch the eyes of the viewers.

Interpretation: I believe this piece shows how easily things change. By having the veggies on a string, and then having them slowly descend down to the table shows a quick change and transformation.

Judgement: I believe this piece looks very realistic. The strings holding the veggies up are visible which makes viewers understand the veggies are not floating.
