OREOS: THE BEGINNING
Oreo brand cookies were introduced to the American people March 6, 1912 at a store in Hoboken, NJ. The National Biscuit Company (now Nabisco, owned by Kraft) were the makers. The first Oreos were made at it's Chelsea, Manhattan factory, the current day Chelsea Market Complex. This is located on 9th Avenue, but today is called Oreo Way. No one really knows where the name Oreo came from, but many believe the French word for gold, "or" has an influence due to the original gold tin packaging. Others say it is just easy to pronounce.
