Abolition
Abolition: the call to outlaw slavery
In the 1820’s, over 100 antislavery societies existed, all fighting for the freedom of slaves. At this time, the North and South were split. The north was made up of pro abolition states, whereas the south was made up of pro slavery states.
The abolitionist movement revolved around the belief that African-Americans were equals to White Americans. The abolitionist cause was to free slaves through immediate emancipation (the freeing of slaves without payment to the owner). This made the south angry, building up tensions that will lead to the Civil War.
