When women started schools, they were insulted, and told "They will be teaching cows next"

In the 1800s, Americans demanded tax-supported public schools. With this, every child would receive an education (to some extent).

After a great deal of trouble, one Horace Mann said " If we do not prepare children to be good citizens... If we do not enrich their minds with knowledge, then our republic must go down to destruction, as others have gone before it."

Mann became the first secretary of the Massachusetts Board of Education, and soon created a statewide learning curriculum. Other states soon followed suit.
