If the slaves were taken away, there would be fewer raw materials to trade to the north. Thus, The united states would import more than they export, harming the economy greatly. Some slave owners could connect slavery to the bible, where slaves were essencial to a structured civilization. Others still said that the slaves liked working the fields, and there could be nothing better to do.
