Martin Luther was a priest. Nailing his complain, known as the Ninety-Five Theses, was his way of adding his voice to the reform. Reformation is a reform movement of Western Christianity. He did not like that the church would give indulgences, a relaxation of penalties for sins people had committed. The church thought that this would reduce the persons sins in purgatory, a place where souls went before they went to heaven. According to him people did not need to do charity or attend church. Them believing in God and living by the bible was enough to save their souls. He was sent to the city of Worms for a meeting. He was ordered to leave the empire, but one noble secretly got him out of Worms and into a where he remained hidden for more than a year. Eventually the Roman Catholic Church split from his ideas. Those who sided with Luther and protested against the church, protestants, were known as Lutherans.
