• The first ruler of the Maurya Empire
was Chandragupta
- a very good ruler in terms of collecting taxes,
trade, and transportation
• Though he was an effective ruler,
he treated his people harshly
- he had a secret police were required
to report crimes, corruption,
and disloyalty to the ruler
• Since he ruled so harshly, he hired
security guards to protect him from any attackers
• Chandragupta's system of government was a bureaucracy
- a bureaucracy is system of government that includes different job functions and levels of authority
